Every remodel begins with a simple truth: your home is about to become a construction site for a little while, and your daily routine is about to shift too. That’s not a bad thing — it’s just part of the journey toward the kitchen, bathroom, or addition you’ve been dreaming about. The homeowners who feel the most at ease during their project are almost always the ones who spent a little time preparing before the first hammer swings.
At Rendon Remodeling & Design, we walk every client through a full Pre-Construction Meeting before work begins, where we cover logistics, schedule, and expectations together. But there’s plenty you can do ahead of that meeting to set your household up for success. Here’s what we recommend.
1. CLEAR THE SPACE
Start with the room itself
Before our team arrives, take a walk through the work area with fresh eyes. Furniture, rugs, artwork, and personal items should come out of the space entirely, and cabinets, drawers, and vanities affected by the project should be emptied ahead of time. Anything hanging on nearby walls — mirrors, shelving, photos — is worth taking down too.
Helpful tip
Dust and vibration travel farther than you’d think. As a rule of thumb, anything within about 6–8 feet of the work area is safer relocated to another room, especially fragile or sentimental items.
2. Protect what’s next door
Think beyond the work zone
Remodeling has a way of reaching just a little past its borders. We install floor protection and dust containment throughout your project, but it helps enormously when adjoining rooms are prepped too — breakables off shelves, valuables tucked away, and anything delicate moved out of the path our crew will be using most.
3. Plan your daily rhythm
Life during construction
If your kitchen is the one being transformed, it’s worth mapping out a temporary cooking setup before it goes offline — a microwave, a grill, or a simple plan for meals out. The same goes for bathrooms: know which ones will stay accessible throughout the project. If you work from home, it’s worth thinking through where you’ll set up during the noisier hours of the day, and building in some flexibility for the occasional utility interruption.
- Kitchens: Set up an alternate cooking space and keep a few easy meals on hand for busy work days.
- Word-from-home: Expect daytime noise and activity, and have a backup spot ready for calls if needed.
4. Kids and Pets
Keep the little ones — of every kind — safely out of the way
Construction zones are genuinely hazardous, so this one matters. Pets should have a comfortable, secure space away from the work area during business hours, and kids should have a clear, simple understanding of which parts of the house are off-limits for now. A little routine here goes a long way toward keeping everyone calm and safe.

Make it easy for your crew to get to work
A few small logistics go a long way toward keeping your project on schedule. We’ll talk through your preferred method of entry — lockbox, key, or otherwise — along with any alarm or security systems we should know about. Our typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm, so having reliable access during that window keeps things moving.
It’s also worth thinking about parking for our team and any material deliveries, along with any HOA guidelines or neighborhood restrictions worth flagging ahead of time, and a spot for a dumpster or debris pile if your project calls for one.
6. Know your home’s systems
A few things worth knowing offhand
Before construction begins, it’s helpful for you — and for us — to know exactly where your electrical panel, water shut-off, and gas shut-off (if applicable) are located. If there are any existing plumbing, electrical, or HVAC quirks in your home, this is the time to mention them, so nothing catches anyone by surprise mid-project.

The final walkthrough
Before the first day of construction, we’ll walk the project area together with your Project Manager one more time — reviewing plans and selections, confirming where materials will be delivered and stored, and making sure every detail is aligned. It’s the last step before your remodel officially begins, and it’s designed to leave you feeling confident, not anxious, about what’s ahead.
