Fall is right around the corner and now is the perfect time to start getting your home ready for the Holidays and the cool weather hibernation that we all love to do.

Rent a Power-washer

Summer is nearly over, and we have had a wet few months here in Northern Virginia. Cleaning up the outside of your home is probably long over-due. Head on over to your local home improvement store and rent a power-washer. In just a few hours, you can have your siding, porches/decks, driveway, sidewalk… pretty much everything outside looking great. A quick YouTube tutorial and under $200 can have your whole house looking completely new again.

Paint

There is no doubt that paint can transform a room. For many of us, it is a time consuming and daunting task that may be better left for a professional. However, small and quick jobs can be inexpensive and very do-it-yourself friendly! The front door is a great place to start. Head over to your local home improvement store and speak to a paint professional about which paint will meet your project needs. This project can be done in a few hours and is a project that your neighbors will instantly notice!

Cleaning Gutters

This is a pretty simple project that you can definitely tackle yourself. You will need to purchase (or borrow) a ladder that is long enough to reach all of the gutters around your house. This is an important project as clogging can cause many issues for your home to include leaks and roof damage. Once you are up there, the process is very easy. Start in the corners or downspouts and pull out any clogs or debris. Then, grab the hose and rinse out the rest. Depending on how large your house is, this should take less than an hour. Of course, if you are not comfortable doing this yourself, there are many companies that offer gutter cleaning services.

Give your Fireplace a Facelift

There are several easy options here for do-it-yourselfers, depending on the type of fireplace that you have and personal preference. Adding shelves above your fireplace or adding new décor to your mantel can make a world of difference. Painting a brick fireplace is an easy and inexpensive way to transform your entire living space! If you’re considering whitewashing your fireplace, keep in mind that this is not as easy as it looks, but will create a bright and cozy space for winter fires. There are many different techniques and options, so spend some time googling tips and tricks that will help you create your desired effect.

Do-it yourself projects are a great way to save money and give you the flexibility to do more and try more with renovation and remodeling projects in your home. Start with small projects like these and you will see the huge difference that they make in and around your home. Call 703.444.3127 for a complimentary consultation!
