So you’re ready to remodel your home? You might be tempted to fast forward to the fun part of selecting fixtures and paint colors, but to ensure your renovation goes smoothly, we’re offering a few things to consider before you begin.

Here at Rendon Remodeling & Design, we strive to provide our clients with outstanding home remodeling and renovation services. We’ve been serving the Northern Virginia area since 2006, and we like to think we’ve learned a few things along the way! Here are ten important things to keep in mind as you plan your dream renovation.

Determine Your Why

Think of the big picture. Why are you choosing to remodel? Do you need more space? Are you looking ahead and considering the resale value of your home when you put it on the market? Or are you just ready for a refresh? Outlining your plan in advance will help you decide how far to go with your project.

Know Your Budget

This is a big one! One of the most important things to consider when planning a renovation is how much you can afford to spend! Figure it out and stick to it. Consider setting money aside for any unexpected costs, including incidental expenses like ordering takeout if you’re doing a kitchen renovation or budgeting for a night or two in a hotel if the upgrade means your plumbing will be turned off for an extended period. Regardless of how extensive your renovations will be, settle on a budget before proceeding.

Research is Key

When you begin thinking about renovating your home, look to family and friends, and even neighbors about their renovation experiences. What challenges did they face? What tips and tricks can they share to make your experience easier and more efficient?  Which projects will you hire a professional for?  Which projects will you tackle on your own? Gathering information in advance can be invaluable and ultimately save you money in the end!

Know Your Limits

If you’re considering undertaking some of your renovations on your own to save money, know your limits! As excited as you might be, it’s essential to know which projects you can safely handle and which projects, like load-bearing walls, should be governed by the pros. This is where the Rendon Remodeling & Design team can come in, do the work for you, and make your remodeling dreams come true.

Get References

Credible contractors will have no issue providing essential information before signing on the dotted line. Information such as recent client references and liability insurance documentation. While online client testimonials are crucial and can give feedback from various people, ask your contractor for the names of a couple of recent clients that you can chat with about their experience. It’s essential to also ask to see examples of a contractor’s prior work.

Get Organized

It’s key to make your house remodel as effortless as possible. It’s a great time to declutter by throwing out or donating items you no longer need and moving or packing up anything that’s currently in the renovation area. If you’re doing a full-house remodel, offsite lockers and storage pods are an excellent way to temporarily secure your belongings.

Establish A Command Center

Before you begin any work, cordon off an area of your home to act as a command center. It’s where you’ll keep all your checklists, materials, tools, and manuals. There’s nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of a home project and realizing you can’t find something you need.

Make a Master List

Set yourself up for success and create a master checklist of everything you’ll need for your renovation. Things like permits, tools, contractors’ numbers, etc… Assessing the list will help determine which means you can save on by renting or borrowing from a friend or family member.

Set-Up a Renovation-Free Area

Renovations can be a messy time. It’s recommended that you designate an area of your home for your family to relax. Ensure you have everything you’ll need in one place for those moments when you want to gather to unwind, eat, or just hang out.

Be Aware of How the Weather Can Impact Your Project

The weather will play a vital role in your renovation plans. For example, there could be delays during the winter months due to winter storms. Additionally, suppose you’re planning to add an addition to your home. In that case, you may want to consider doing the renovation during the warmer season so cold air isn’t getting into your house.

We hope these tips help prepare you for your renovation! So, grab a pen and paper and start planning. Remember to take your time, stay within your budget, and feel free to reach out to a trusted company near you!
